Vegas in April (April 2003)
Nevada (or rather Vegas) is one of my favorite places to visit! Here are the highlights of my trips to Nevada:
When We're 21, We're Going for New Years (1997)
Melissa and I kept talking about going to Vegas for several years before we turned 21. We swore that we were going to go for New Years Eve for the year that we turned 21. We stayed about a week in the MGM hotel. We did quite a bit of sightseeing, walking up and down the strip visiting all the major hotels. We played a few slot machines, but we were a bit intimidated by the table games (plus we were still in college, so we didn't have much money to gamble!). We took the Fastest Dam Tour in Town to the Hoover Dam where we ate a Dam Dog in the Dam Snackateria. We saw Siegfried and Roy (and had amazing seats IN the stage) as well as Lance Burton. We attended a comedy show and ate in the revolving restaurant at the top of the Stratosphere.
NC State Trombone Section Alumni Trip (2000)
Several members of the trombone section decided that we missed going on trips together after most of us had graduated. We went on a trip to Austin in August of 1999 (see Texas for more information on that trip) and to Vegas in September of 2000. We stayed at Circus Circus and played a lot of $1 Blackjack at Slots-a-Fun. We even managed to get all six of us at one table at one point, which lead to many amusing moments. We also learned how to play craps (poops!) and played cheap $1 craps at Slots-a-fun. This was my first trip playing Pai Gow poker as well. We did some of the typical Vegas sightseeing things and went to a Carrot Top show (which I thought was going to be terrible, but was actually hilarious). We all had a fancy dinner at Emeril's, and four of us saw "O" at Bellagio. This was my second Vegas trip with Melissa.
Melissa's Bachelorette Trip (2003)
Once again, I took a trip to Vegas with Melissa. This time we went as a bachelorette trip since her wedding was a few months away. One of her other bridesmaids also went on this one. We splurged and stayed at the Venetian, which was nice! Once again, we saw another Cirque du Soleil show...this time "Mystere" at Treasure Island. We did some sightseeing and went down to Slots-a-Fun and Sahara for some cheap table games.
Simon and Garfunkel in Vegas (2003)
When I found out that Simon and Garfunkel were getting together for a tour, I knew that I had to find some way to see a show. Their Vegas show worked out perfectly for me as it was on a weekend in November 2003. On this trip, I took a side trip to both Hoover Dam (for the first time since my first visit) and Red Rock Canyon. Red Rock Canyon was really neat, and we had fun climbing around the natural playground. I stayed downtown for the first (and only) time at Fitzgerald's.
The First Poker Trip to Vegas (2004)
In September 2004, the poker group went to Vegas to play poker for the first time. We did a small amount of sightseeing, and spent a lot of time at the poker tables. We stayed at the Mirage and played poker at Mirage, Four Queens, Binion's, Plaza, Golden Nugget, Mandalay Bay, Excalibur, and Luxor. We played in a couple of the Four Queens Classic events. See the trip report for more details.
Last Minute Trip to Vegas (2005)
Brad, Brian and I decided to go to Vegas just a few weeks before the trip in February 2005. This was the first time that I planned a trip to Vegas so quickly. We found the best deal at Excalibur (or as we prefer to call it, "The Trashy Castle"). We played ring games mostly at Excalibur and Mandalay Bay. We played in two tournaments - one at The Orleans and one at Sahara. See the trip report for more details.
Vegas with Mom and Dad (2005)
I finally managed to be in Vegas at the same time as Mom and Dad in April 2005! I was excited to be there during the Final Four so I could try out the world of sportsbetting again. After placing all the wrong bets in the semifinals, I retired from the sportsbetting business! Brian and I were the only poker group regulars on this trip, but we met up with others we knew. Alan, Gabe, and Donovan were there (aside from my parents, of course). We played ring games at Aladdin, Excalibur, Mandalay Bay, and the newly opened MGM Grand. We played in a tournament at the Sahara. See the trip report for more details. We stayed at the Monte Carlo this time.
World Series of Poker (2005)
The poker group wanted to be in Vegas as the same time as events during the WSOP. We decided to go over the July 4th weekend since most of us were short on vacation days. It was exciting to see WSOP events in person and play in a few satellites. See the trip report for more details. We stayed at the MGM this time.
Vegas in early 2006
Most of the poker group was not able to go to Vegas for the second half of 2005 due to lack of vacation days. We scheduled a trip early in the year since we really missed playing! We stayed at the MGM again. See the trip report for more details.
Family, Love, and Poker in Vegas (April 2007)
We planned this trip in December, and we had no idea that we would be closing on our new house just a few short days before the trip! It was nice to get away for a few days from all the stress with moving and settling into the new place! We met up with my parents and Gabe's Mom. We spent some time with family, played some poker, and saw The Beatles Cirque du Soleil show, Love. See the trip report for more information.
