Weekend in Davidson photos

Purpose: To visit my parents at their house!

More details:
Gabe and I took a quick trip to Davidson to visit with my parents. We attended their neighborhood picnic on Saturday. On Sunday, we headed a little further west to Lincolnton where we visited with my friend Catherine and her family.

Gabe and I arrived in Davidson on Saturday an hour or two before the start of the neighborhood picnic. Mom and Dad helped organize the picnic, and Dad asked me to take photos at the event as a sort of "official" photographer. Dad was the emcee of the event and spent a lot of time making announcements and such at the microphone.

I took about 200 photos at the picnic, so I got a fair amount of practice with my still new Canon Rebel XT. I learned a few new things at the event (such as the need for a lens hood to combat lens flare), and a few things when I visited Catherine the next day. Overall, I was fairly pleased with the photos. I still have so much to learn!

We had dinner at the event which included yummy NC-style BBQ as well as a broad selection of sides and desserts that various residents contributed to the picnic. The kids all seemed to have a great time, including the two who became my new friends and wanted to make me into a human jungle gym.

Saturday night, we played some pinochle. This was the first time that Gabe and I had played pinochle with Mom and Dad. They hadn't played in a long time, but they were still able to defeat us! It was a fairly close game with both teams earning more than the required 500 points to win the game.

Sunday morning, we had a quick breakfast and perused the bookshelves for potential books to borrow. Next time I'll have to take some photos of the bookshelves. My parents have a fairly massive collection! We filled a small box with books to take back with us (though you better believe that Dad will want them back!).

We left a little before noon to head to Catherine's house in Lincolnton. Catherine and I were friends and roommates at NC State. We have kept in touch over the years (I guess we've known each other for more than a decade now, wow!). We figured out that we hadn't seen each other in 3 years! Too long!

Catherine has been trying to get me to visit her for a while, and we finally had a little time to do it on this trip. Usually our trips to visit my parents are so short, we generally don't have much time to spare. We spent the afternoon with Catherine, her husband Matt, and their adorable 2-year-old son Aiden.

Catherine has gotten serious about photography in the past several years, and I have been going to her for advice lately on camera equipment and photography techniques. She's one of the only people I know that probably takes more photos than I do! It should come as no great surprise that we took some photos throughout the afternoon!

Catherine and Matt fed us hotdogs and hamburgers from the grill, yum! I was excited about the hotdogs since the hotdogs at the picnic were subpar. The hotdogs that Matt grilled for us were very tasty!

We spent a good bit of time playing with camera equipment. Matt and Catherine seemed quite amused with how much smaller my SLR is compared to the one that they have. I tried out some of Catherine's equipment, including her Speedlite flash and the famous Gary Fong LightSphere II diffuser. Wow! I was amazed by the difference between the built-in camera flash and the Speedlite flash. I immediately put the flash at the top of my list of things to buy for my camera (in addition to a lens hood).

Compare these to photographs to see what I mean:

I cropped the photos in photoshop, but I did not adjust any of the color or lighting in either photo. I didn't know how badly I needed to get a new flash until seeing these results! I decided to order the flash and diffuser so that I could have it for Gabe's sister's wedding as well as our upcoming photography class. This trip to Catherine's house is turning out to be fairly expensive! They were trying to convince me to purchase some other lenses and accessories, but I think that some of those suggestions will have to wait until later.

We had a great time visiting with Catherine, Matt, and Aiden. I'm sure that we will try to see them again on future trips to Davidson. I'll just make sure that I have a photography budget before coming to see them!!

We headed back to Raleigh late in the afternoon with a stop at Cracker Barrel for dinner. Another fun-filled quick trip!
